Her Hands

Anna Mae Pictou Aquash

Her Hands

intricate lines and creases

swirls, whorls, impressions

strength and power

gentleness and comfort

in those hands

why did you take them ?

hands

that held babies loved

caressed a lover… a husband

hands

of a warrior woman

why did you take them ?

hands

that fought back

resisted

the darkness

did you look

into her eyes

did you hear a

prayer to Creator

whispered

by the wind

when you took them

is your sleep

interrupted

with the vision

of her

do you shudder

in fear

those hands

her hands

will reach beyond

the grave

to mark

you

tremble

you

should

why did you take them ?

those hands

her hands

your soul

is marked

imprinted

with her hands

our hands

native hands

strong

frail

young

old

our hands

our hearts

hold her memory

our hands

you will not take

did you think

we would forget ?

we will never forget

what you did

to

her

we will not forget

her hands.
