Columbus Was No “Strong Natural Genius” nor “Brave” To Commit Genocide (Update)

Apologists for Christopher Columbus say that Columbus coming here was inevitable, that if he hadn’t come to the New World, somebody else would have. On the other hand, some racists are overt in spreading extermination philosophies of Columbus. However, since the former is more subtle and spreads the Columbus Disease more – it is worse. This, is the lesser of the two evils.

The Daily Wire’s animated video begins with a caption that sarcastically reads, “The North American indigenous people are a noble people…” Then, a group of Native Americans are seen slaughtering and even eating each other. But alas, there is hope for these evil, murderous savages, as the clip then cuts to a very Caucasian looking Christopher Columbus arriving on the North American continent and taming the indigenous people. He does this by teaching them how to construct buildings, raise cattle, and farm crops — though, the video does not include the ethnic genocide, land-stealing, and rape that Columbus and his crew are known by many for.

The second caption reads “1492-2017” and a montage of civilizational progress is shown — suggesting that this positive progress was the sole result of white Europeans showing up in America and killing off much of the native population.

I made the mistake of taking it for granted people would associate Columbus with slavery and genocide and not idealize his voyage 500 years ago. It does stand to reason, however, that given the fact dividends are available, as natural resources become more scarce on the Dominant Culture’s land, it should come as no shock Washington kept its primary name for its football team.

Many, if not most, of this country’s natural resources are on tribal lands,

Tribal energy resources are vast, largely untapped, and critical to America’s efforts to achieve energy security and independence, reduce greenhouse gases, and promote economic development.

and dehumanizing people through racist logos and idealizing Columbus, who committed atrocities, should be expected in a society as ignorant of American Indian issues as this.

Idealizing Columbus’s Voyage has dividends. Moreover, the dehumanizing and racism makes collecting those dividends easier, for Red****s are stolen from, not real human beings.

Finalizing this, idealizing Columbus’s Voyage is premised on the fantasy of white supremacy because it’s based on fiction.

The Conversation: How Christopher Columbus was resurrected in the United States

Inventing Columbus

In the mid-18th century, scholars brought to light long-forgotten documents about Columbus and the early history of the New World.

One of the most important was Bartolome de las Casas’ three-volume “Historia de las Indias.” This book was suppressed in Spain because it documented Spain’s harsh treatment of the native peoples. His depiction of Spanish mistreatment of the Indians provided the foundation for the “Black Legend.” His account “blackened” Spanish character by depicting it as repressive, brutal, intolerant and intellectually and artistically backward. Whatever Spain’s motives, the conquest of the Americas destroyed native cultures and ushered in centuries of African enslavement.

After Paris, the United States set out to prove to the world it was the equal of Europe by staging its own World’s Fair. No one has claimed credit for the theme of the Exposition, but the stage was set when American writer and author of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” Washington Irving, attempted to revive his flagging career by writing the first biography of Christopher Columbus in English, published in 1828.

His embellishments created the great hero whose legend the fair celebrated: “He was one of those men of strong natural genius, who appear to form themselves; who, from having to contend at their very outset with privations and impediments, acquire an intrepidity in braving and a facility in vanquishing difficulties.”

Christopher Columbus being “one of those men of strong natural genius…. having to contend at their very outset with privations and impediments, … braving and a facility in vanquishing difficulties,” is no more real than the Headless Horseman. That is, unless you think it takes “strong natural genius” and “braving” to commit genocide.

AND WHEN AT LAST HIS HEALTH AND STRENGTH HAD BEEN RESTORED COLUMBUS’S RESPONSE TO HIS MEN’S UNORGANIZED DEPREDATIONS WAS TO ORGANIZE THEM. IN MARCH OF 1495 HE MASSED TOGETHER SEVERAL HUNDRED ARMORED TROOPS, CAVALRY, AND A SCORE OR MORE OF TRAINED ATTACK DOGS. THEY SET FORTH ACROSS THE COUNTRYSIDE, TEARING INTO ASSEMBLED MASSES OF SICK AND UNARMED NATIVE PEOPLE, SLAUGHTERING THEM BY THE THOUSANDS.

The great masses of the people will more easily fall victims to a big lie than to a small one.

Thank you for putting this in the Community Spotlight, and for it being reblogged by Daily Kos Liberation League and Native American Netroots! Ojibwa, who I greatly admire, offers the following information from Indians 201: The Discovery Doctrine:

European nations assumed that they had a right to govern the Indian nations they encountered. This right stemmed from the legal and religious Doctrine of Discovery which declares that Christian nations have a right, if not an obligation, to govern all non-Christian nations. Once an Indian nation had been read the Christian history of the world, even though it might be read to them in a language they did not understand, then they were obligated to be ruled by the superior Christian nation.
