Lessons of Columbus Haven’t Been Learned – Except By the Modern — Day Pope

Pope Alexander VI issued a Papal Bull in 1493 after Columbus’s first voyage in 1492. How did he order it to be complied with?

Pope Alexander VI ordered Ferdinand and Isabella to comply: by agreeing the primary purpose of all voyages is christianizing and overthrowing all resisting nations, and doing so is “By the Authority of Almighty God;” by overthrowing all non-christian rulers, and then placing christian rulers in authority; by excommunicating anyone trading with someone who overthrew a christian ruler, and going against any of this “Incurs the wrath of Almighty God.” Let us then, “Incur the wrath.”

Newcomb: The smoking gun By Steven Newcomb

We now have conclusive evidence: In a legal brief filed in the case Tee Hit Ton, the United States government traced the origin of Indian title in U.S. law to the ideology that discovering Christian sovereigns had the right to take over and acquire the lands of “heathens and infidels.”

And where do “heathens and infidels” go after death? To Hell, of course.

A short excerpt from: “Religion on the Frontier” by Bernard A Weisberger. From “Historical Viewpoints.” pp. 253-254:

The great revival in the West, or the Kentucky Revival of 1800, as it was sometimes called, was a landmark in American History… Which way would the West go?… No group asked this question more anxiously than eastern clergymen. For, in 1800, they saw that their particular pattern was being abandoned on the frontier….McGready began to preach to these congregations, and he did not deal with such recondite matters as the doctrines contained in Matthew…Instead he would “so describe Heaven” that his listeners would “see its glories and long to be there.” Then he went on to “array hell and its horrors” so that the wicked would “tremble and quake, imagining a lake of fire and brimstone yawning to overwhelm them.”

Allow me to share circular reasoning of my own. Since heaven can not be proven nor disproved, neither can hell. I hope there is a hell and it’s unbearable. Furthermore, I hope those who’ve committed crimes against humanity are there. I don’t believe in hell though; I believe in something akin to the First Law of Thermodynamics.

(Bold mine)

The First Law of Thermodynamics states that heat is a form of energy, and thermodynamic processes are therefore subject to the principle of conservation of energy. This means that heat energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can, however, be transferred from one location to another and converted to and from other forms of energy.

The lessons of Columbus haven’t been learned, so history’s butchers have been “transferred from one location to another.”

“Time is on their side” while crimes against humanity continue being enabled for capitalism, and it will continue as long as the Military Industrial Complex exists with Manifest Destiny at its helm. History’s butchers aren’t in hell, they’re with us as that engine of grief called fundamentalism fuels greed and puts blood money into their bank accounts. Why is all that true? Because I said it is. Circle, circle, circle………

Time is on my side, yes it is.
Time is on my side, yes it is.
Now you all were saying that you want to be free
But you’ll come runnin’ back (I said you would baby),
You’ll come runnin’ back (like I told you so many times before),
You’ll come runnin’ back to me.

Last of all, I want to be fair with gratitude. Why is it of the few highly influential world leaders — in politics or religion — the modern – day Pope, who doesn’t live in the Unites States, seems to have learned the lessons of Columbus? Where’s the equivalent here?

“Francis wants to break the organic link between culture, politics, institution and Church,” the priests wrote. “Spirituality cannot tie itself to governments or military pacts for it is at the service of all men and women. Religions cannot consider some people as sworn enemies nor others as eternal friends. Religion should not become the guarantor of the dominant classes.”

WHEREVER THE MARAUDING, DISEASED, AND HEAVILY ARMED SPANISH FORCES WENT OUT ON PATROL, ACCOMPANIED BY FEROCIOUS ARMORED DOGS THAT HAD BEEN TRAINED TO KILL AND DISEMBOWEL, THEY PREYED ON THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES- ALREADY PLAGUE-ENFEEBLED-FORCING THEM TO SUPPLY FOOD AND WOMEN AND SLAVES, AND WHATEVER ELSE THE SOLDIERS MIGHT DESIRE. AT VIRTUALLY EVERY PREVIOUS LANDING ON THIS TRIP COLUMBUS’S TROOPS HAD GONE ASHORE AND KILLED INDISCRIMINATELY, AS THOUGH FOR SPORT, WHATEVER ANIMALS AND BIRDS AND NATIVES THEY ENCOUNTERED, “LOOTING AND DESTROYING ALL THEY FOUND,” AS THE ADMIRAL’S SON FERNANDO BLITHELY PUT IT. ONCE ON HISPANIOLA, HOWEVER, COLUMBUS FELL ILL-WHETHER FROM THE FLU OR, MORE LIKELY, FROM SOME OTHER MALADY-AND WHAT LITTLE RESTRAINT HE HAD MAINTAINED OVER HIS MEN DISAPPEARED AS HE WENT THROUGH A LENGTHY PERIOD OF RECUPERATION. THE TROOPS WENT WILD, STEALING, KILLING, RAPING, AND TORTURING NATIVES, TRYING TO FORCE THEM TO DIVULGE THE WHEREABOUTS OF THE IMAGINED TREASURE-HOUSES OF GOLD.

THE INDIANS TRIED TO RETALIATE BY LAUNCHING INEFFECTIVE AMBUSHES OF STRAY SPANIARDS. BUT THE COMBINED KILLING FORCE OF SPANISH DISEASES AND SPANISH MILITARY MIGHT WAS FAR GREATER THAN ANYTHING THE NATIVES COULD EVER HAVE IMAGINED. FINALLY, THEY DECIDED THE BEST RESPONSE WAS FLIGHT. CROPS WERE LEFT TO ROT IN THE FIELDS AS THE INDIANS ATTEMPTED TO ESCAPE THE FRENZY OF THE CONQUISTADORS’ ATTACKS. STARVATION THEN ADDED ITS CONTRIBUTION, ALONG WITH PESTILENCE AND MASS MURDER, TO THE NATIVE PEOPLES’ WOES.

THE MASSACRES CONTINUED. COLUMBUS REMAINED ILL FOR MONTHS WHILE HIS SOLDIERS WANDERED FREELY. MORE THAN 50,000 NATIVES WERE REPORTED DEAD FROM THESE ENCOUNTERS BY THE TIME THE ADMIRAL HAD RECOVERED FROM HIS SICKNESS. AND WHEN AT LAST HIS HEALTH AND STRENGTH HAD BEEN RESTORED COLUMBUS’S RESPONSE TO HIS MEN’S UNORGANIZED DEPREDATIONS WAS TO ORGANIZE THEM. IN MARCH OF 1495 HE MASSED TOGETHER SEVERAL HUNDRED ARMORED TROOPS, CAVALRY, AND A SCORE OR MORE OF TRAINED ATTACK DOGS. THEY SET FORTH ACROSS THE COUNTRYSIDE, TEARING INTO ASSEMBLED MASSES OF SICK AND UNARMED NATIVE PEOPLE, SLAUGHTERING THEM BY THE THOUSANDS. THE PATTERN SET BY THESE RAIDS WOULD BE THE MODEL THE SPANISH WOULD FOLLOW FOR THE NEXT DECADE AND BEYOND. AS BARTOLOME DE LAS CASAS, THE MOST FAMOUS OF THE ACCOMPANYING SPANISH MISSIONARIES FROM THAT TRIP RECALLED:

ONCE THE INDIANS WERE IN THE WOODS, THE NEXT STEP WAS TO FORM SQUADRONS AND PURSUE THEM, AND WHENEVER THE SPANIARDS FOUND THEM, THEY PITILESSLY SLAUGHTERED EVERYONE LIKE SHEEP IN A CORRAL. IT WAS A GENERAL RULE AMONG SPANIARDS TO BE CRUEL; NOT JUST CRUEL, BUT EXTRAORDINARILY CRUEL SO THAT HARSH AND BITTER TREATMENT WOULD PREVENT INDIANS FROM DARING TO THINK OF THEMSELVES AS HUMAN BEINGS OR HAVING A MINUTE TO THINK AT ALL. SO THEY WOULD CUT AN INDIAN’S HANDS AND LEAVE THEM DANGLING BY A SHRED OF SKIN AND THEY WOULD SEND HIM ON SAYING “GO NOW, SPREAD THE NEWS TO YOUR CHIEFS.” THEY WOULD TEST THEIR SWORDS AND THEIR MANLY STRENGTH ON CAPTURED INDIANS AND PLACE BETS ON THE SLICING OFF OF HEADS OR THE CUTTING OF BODIES IN HALF WITH ONE BLOW. THEY BURNED OR HANGED CAPTURED CHIEFS.”

AT LEAST ONE CHIEF, THE MAN CONSIDERED BY COLUMBUS TO BE HISPANIOLA’S RANKING NATIVE LEADER, WAS NOT BURNED OR HANGED, HOWEVER. HE WAS CAPTURED, PUT IN CHAINS, AND SENT OFF BY SHIP FOR PUBLIC DISPLAY AND IMPRISONMENT IN SPAIN. LIKE MOST OF THE INDIANS WHO HAD BEEN FORCED TO MAKE THAT VOYAGE, THOUGH, HE NEVER MADE IT TO SEVILLE: HE DIED EN ROUTE.
